When I first met Chris and Penny, the owners of Lynnfield Bed and Breakfast, they explained how keen they were to have a new look and feel for their newly renovated B&B. I had a tour of the building, it was fab! Full of really quirky ornaments and with a great art deco feel. The B&B is situated in Robin Hood’s Bay, near to Whitby, and many of the rooms have great views overlooking the sea.

The first call to action was getting a brand and logo tied down. I set to work researching and sketching up ideas and concepts. After speaking to Chris and Penny I realised they we keen to have an Art Deco themed logo which they could carry through in their branding. I eventually gave them a few different ideas. They were really suited with them and settled on the square L monogram logo which also doubles up as an Art Deco wave, reflecting the coastal location of the B&B. I had also incorporated a colour scheme which reflected the beach and surrounding area, so it tied in really nicely with the design.

Once the logo and guidelines where in place I worked with Martyn to design the website. I also enlisted the help of Hannah Webster who did the internal photography and who also produced a google tour of the B&B. This was embedded into the website so potential guests could wander around the rooms at their own leisure. The website was designed in line with the branding, so everything all fit together nicely.

The next job was creating a leaflet which would be placed outside in the leaflet holder and also used to promote the B&B. Again the branding played a key part and the colour scheme and style was used to create an eye catching leaflet. Then a set of breakfast menus were created for guests, along with a display menu and poster for outside.

Alongside this I provided Chris and Penny with business cards, letterheads and compliment slips. I helped them with the print management of all of their literature so that they got the best quality for the best price. I always insist to clients that cheap online print doesn’t always mean good quality. I’d highly recommend using a print company who is well established and produces good quality print work. There isn’t much point having a leaflet nicely designed and then having it printed on something that feels like tissue paper when you get it in the post. I’ll always make sure that the print is done well and advise on different paper stocks and weights so that the finished result is something that you actually want to give to people.

Once all the literature and website was ready to go, I helped them set up their social media side of the business. They were keen to use Facebook so I branded the business page inline with the rest of their work and had the link’s all set up on their website. They also have a blog on their website which is content managed, so they can keep it updated and please the little Google SEO robots. Infact their whole site is content managed so they can change and update it as they please. It is also compatible on other various devices such as mobiles and tablets. More and more people use their phone or iPad to view sites these days, so it’s massively important to have a website that works well.

As well as having all the literature and website done, they had signage created and also commissioned their new logo to be made into stained glass so it can be fixed on the outside of the building and backlit.

They are both really suited with the work and have told me how it has had such a positive effect on the business. It was a great project to work on, so I’m grateful they gave me the opportunity to do so.

“We commissioned Kathryn Speak in October 2012 to design our website and to produce a logo which could be incorporated across all media

We have been absolutely delighted in the high quality work Kathryn has designed including an excellent logo which is eye catching yet subtle.  She designed all the stationary including display posters, letterheads, compliment slips, business cards, brochure and menu cards and developed these as a consistent package incorporating the logo.

She produced the design for our website and Facebook page and helped us to project a style we wanted to project.  The feedback from tourist agencies and visitors is 100% positive – even to the extent that on the strength of the quality of the website alone we were advised to apply for a white rose award.

We have found Kathryn to be very easy to work with.  She is approachable, and also professional and thorough in her work.  She responded promptly to emails and telephone calls and we felt her communications with us were excellent.  Our views were regularly sought and we found her easy to work with and responsive to our needs.  She also has an enthusiasm for the work she does and is keen to produce top quality work with an eye for detail.

Kathryn produced an excellent portfolio of work for us which has helped us to project a very positive image of our B&B.

We have no hesitation in recommending Kathryn as an excellent designer who delivers top quality work and does it with enthusiasm.”
